The Vibe: One of the top local operators in town, offering comfortable private or shared on-demand airport transit.
The Cost / Time: $30–$60 USD (much cheaper if you share the ride with other backpackers). Roughly a 50-minute drive.
How to Book: Look them up online or book directly through almost any hostel reception desk in El Tunco.
For the real budget backpackers- This whole mission takes about 1.5 to 2 hours total compared to a 50-minute taxi, but it will cost you less than $3 USD total versus a $30+ private ride. Just give yourself plenty of buffer time before your flight checks in!
Step 1: El Tunco -> La Libertad: Walk up to the highway on the ocean side and catch Bus 102, 80A, 192, or 12LL eastbound. Ride it for about 20 minutes to the main terminal/market area in La Libertad ($0.50 USD).
Step 2: La Libertad -> Airport Highway Intersection: Transfer to Bus 187 heading eastbound along the coastal highway (CA-2) toward Zacatecoluca. Tell the driver’s assistant you are heading to the airport (el aeropuerto).
Step 3: The Drop-off: The bus cannot drive directly up to the departure gates, so it will drop you off at the main highway intersection right outside the airport grounds ($1.25 USD). From there, grab an Uber or hitchhike the final 2-kilometer stretch straight to the terminal terminal gates.
You can book these routes directly through almost any hostel reception in El Tunco, or check schedules online with top local operators like Gekko Trails Explorer, Roneey Shuttle, or Bigfoot Shuttles.
